Austin Type Font
The following hand-lettered font is inspired by my observations of the East Side community in Austin, TX. My observations are closely related to mural art that has a lot of significance to the Latino community that still holds up in the continuing gentrification of the East side. Along with murals, I looked closely at the different styles of hand-lettered signs used in various ‘Taquerias’ (taco stands) located around East Austin.
Hand-lettered signs – or better known as ‘rotulos’ in Mexico – hold a lot of history. The idea still has a purpose today as it serves as a cheap method for announcing or advertising products, services, and events. I began with the simple idea of capturing the essence of the standard hand-lettered style and turning into a typeface that has a bold touch that is reminiscent of traditional rotulos.
